Honolulu Zoo: Our Trip and Review!

Let me just start by saying that I'm a big fan of zoos. Big and small, it doesn't matter. It could be a turtle zoo and I would be entertained. I grew up in Alaska with probably one of the smallest zoos in the country, so that probably has something to do with it. I've been to zoos in 6 states though, and the Honolulu Zoo is definitely one of my favorites.

If you live in the Honolulu area I absolutely recommend purchasing an Annual Pass. They start out at $40 for 2 adults and $55 for 2 adults and up to 4 children. This includes entrance in a Membership Only line, discounts at the cafe and gift store, and more. The rates are $14 for adults, $6 for children 3-12, and $8 for kama'aina and military.

The zoo has plenty of picnic space, as well as a small playground for the kids (including an even smaller piece of play equipment for toddlers, which I love). They encourage bringing in outside food, just be sure to clean up afterwards, there are plenty of trash cans around.

The elephants seem to really be enjoying their new exhibit and so are we! It was really sad to see them couped up in their small enclosure for so long!

There always seems to be something exciting going on with the animals when we come. We've seen young tigers playing, chimpanzees running around like crazy, elephants getting a bath, gigantic tortoises mating (that was hilarious, the males make this really, really loud noise!), and even saw a white handed gibbon get a handful of feathers when trying to catch a dove. This time the exotic birds gave us a show, usually they are sleeping but today they were singing and eating, Miss M really loved watching them!

Parking here is a  breeze. Even when the parking lot is full, I've never had to wait longer than 5 minutes for a space to open up. This is also a great place to park if you aren't staying in Waikiki but would like to visit the beach or another place nearby. It costs $1 an hour, which is pocket change compared to the rest of Honolulu! Not only is it cheap, but you don't have to display anything on your dash AND you can even call the number on your parking slip to extend your time. How cool is that?? Muy convenient!

If you're visiting Oahu I really recommend you take some time to visit the zoo. Admission prices are so low and you are guaranteed to see some cool animals!

A Pin a Day

Today's pin comes from Simple Kids! It's a wonderful post about building a child friendly garden. As I was reading this post my imagination was whirling with things I would love to build for my children outside. One day we will own our own home and my dreams will come true! I just hope they will still be young enough to truly enjoy it!

I do my best to involve Miss M in the gardening. In fact, it's a little hard not to involve her. We recently set up a kiddie pool in the backyard, and it has somehow become a daily ritual for her and I to go outside and water the new seedlings with water from the pool. Her watering can of choice is an empty Play Dough cup that has been floating around the lanai for ages. Aside from the danger of her over-watering the tiny plants this is a really great way for her to be involved!

Trip to Waimea Falls: A Review

Waimea Falls is one of my favorite places to visit on Oahu. Located on the North Shore in Waimea Valley, this beautiful park features a very wide well-paved path, botanical garden style labeled vegetation, port-a-potties, craft stations along the route, park benches and picnic tables, ample parking, and a visitors center which includes a small restaurant, a gift shop and clean restrooms. On busy days there is also a snack bar at the top of the trail with shaved ice and other goodies!

There is even a really cool archaeological spot displaying a living area of the ancient Hawaiians that once populated this gorgeous place. Please be respectful and stay on the trail, do not touch the rock walls, as these are part of the original layout. When in doubt, don't touch! :)

Aside from the beautiful plants, flowers and trees, there are also a plethora of birds that can easily be seen from the path. A bird guide is given to you at the entrance, so you can easily find the name of the cute little bird you're admiring.

The best part of this trail, though? The rewarding 45-foot high waterfall at the end of course! A lifeguard will be present and if conditions are good, swimming is allowed in the pool at the base of the waterfall! It doesn't get more idyllic than a hike through a floral jungle that ends at a waterfall. Life jackets are available, as well as changing rooms for those who need them.

The hike is 3/4 mile up to the falls, and 3/4 mile back down. Even though it is paved it does get a little steep in spots (although for the most part my 2 year old was able to walk it). For those who are in a hurry or would rather skip the hike, you can also pay to take a shuttle up to the waterfall and back down again.

Check out Hawaii Web for more information about Waimea Valley Adventure Park.

Directions: From Waikiki take highway H1 West to H2. Take H2 North and get off at Exit 8 (Wahiawa). Merge onto Hwy 99 Kamehameha Hwy, continue onto 83E until you see Waimea Falls Park entrance on the right (it's directly after the Waimea Beach Park entrance on your left).

LetJoy Cloth Wipe Giveaway! 4/14

I've been cloth diapering for a little over 2 years now (I know that's small change for some of you ;), and I salute you for that!), but it's only been in the last month or so that I've started using cloth wipes. Let me just take a moment here and slap the bejeesus out of the me from 2 years ago. What was I thinking using Pampers wipes all this time? Throwing away wipes, buying wipes, throwing away more wipes... I've been missing out on so much of the cloth diapering experience! The cute patterns.. the easy clean ups.. not to mention the fun wipe solution discussions and products :)

Good cloth wipes really make all the difference, and let's not forget the great coordinating patterns! LetJoy Cloth Diapers makes some really fabulous cloth wipes that I was lucky enough to review! Ok, I know I'm beating the pattern thing into the ground, but the monkey pirate pattern is so cute I want to make a blanket out of it for Mr. C!

These wipes are made of single layer flannel, with surged edges to avoid fraying. I've been using mine for about two weeks now and I have seen no fraying. Remember! The more you wash flannel the softer and more absorbent it is. This is definitely true of these wipes!

LetJoy also makes wipes in cotton velour. Velour is so soft, perfect for those delicate areas and soft baby bottoms! They are super absorbent and even stain resistant! I love getting out the velour wipes to finish off a messy job!

Don't be silly like me, if you are cloth diapering but resisting cloth wipes, make the change! It's worth it!

But it! A 6 pack of flannel cloth wipes are only $6 at the LetJoy Etsy store!

Win it! One lucky person will win a variety pack of 6 cloth wipes from LetJoy! Use the Rafflecopter form below to enter. There are plenty of extra entries so lots of chances to win! Giveaway ends April 14th 2012!

How to Organize Pages On the New Facebook

This month has seen a lot of giveaway events, which means you have probably "liked" more Facebook fan pages than you can count, most likely pages of blogs and businesses you have never even heard of! This can get pretty overwhelming, pretty fast. No one wants to be so inundated with fan page notices that you miss the important statuses of your close friends and relatives.

You don't need to "hide" or "unlike" all these new fan pages after the giveaway is over however, there is another way! Everyone wants to be a little more organized in their life, so here is how you can organize your Facebook, and hopefully get a little more out of the 15 minutes you spend there in between managing babies or managing your office.

Facebook allows you to organize your friends into lists. You can edit your lists anytime, friends can be put into multiple lists, and you can even write statuses that are seen only by the people in a specific list.

You can do the same with your "liked" fan pages. Here's how!

1. Go to the home page by clicking on "facebook" in the top left corner.
2. In the left hand column click on "friends".
3. Click on "Create List" in the top right corner.
4. A dialogue box should have opened.
    - In the box next to "List Name:" type in the name of your list, I chose the name "Liked Blogs".
    - Skip over the box next to "Members:"
    - Click on "Create"
5. Click on "Manage List" in the top right corner.
    - Choose "Edit List"
6. A dialogue box will open.
    - Click on the drop down menu labeled "On This List" in the top left of the dialogue box.
    - Choose "Pages"
    - A list of all of your liked pages will populate, choose pages to put in this list by clicking on  them. (They will highlight in blue with a check mark in the corner when they are chosen.)
    - You can scroll down to see more pages.
    - When you are finished selecting pages click on "Finish" in the bottom right corner of the dialogue box.
7. Your list will now appear under "Friends" in the column on the left, if you don't see a list you created in the column click on the word "friends" (or "more" when you mouse over it). You will be taken to a page with all of your lists, some of which Facebook has already created for you.
8. Enjoy your new organized Facebook :)

You can do the same with your friends, coworkers and family members!

I hope this tutorial helped you! No one wants to see their fans "unlike" or "hide" their pages, so please consider this alternative option! Thanks!

1000 Facebook Fan Celebration Giveaway 4/3

UPDATE: My perfume came in the mail today! I was so excited to open it :D It came tightly wrapped and nicely packaged, it's also sealed with plastic so no spills in the envelope. I received the Never Forget You fragrance. The perfume bottle is small, like advertised, about the size of lip gloss so it fits easily in my pocket, purse and makeup bag

The perfume has a roll on applicator, so it's mess free. I love that! Never Forget You has a wonderful tangy citrus tone that I love. You only need a tad, it's very strong! Which is great because it means it will last a really long time. I've had it on for about an hour now and the scent has started to fade a little. It's a nice trace on my wrists and I love it! (/smells arm) Mmmm.

This giveaway is for YOU! I am absolutely thrilled to have so many new Facebook followers! So in honor of you, who so kindly liked my page, I am holding a giveaway!

I find that since having children the amount of time I spend "gettin all pertied up" in the bathroom in the morning has severely dwindled. I am limited to things I can A) do on the go and B) will fit in my purse/pocket.

In comes PiixlWix Candle Company's fragrance line! A petite 0.25oz bottle will easily stow away any place, perfect for the on-the-go mom. You may not have had time for mascara, but at least you won't smell like stewed carrots and sour breastmilk ;)

"Blended in fractionated coconut oil, they are feather light, absorb quickly, and are non-staining.  Fragrance worn on the skin lasts longer and becomes your own scent when it mixes with your own natural chemistry."

PiixlWix offers 3 different types of fragrances:

Never Forget You~Patchouli is sweetened with lovely orange and then brought back to the spicy side with clove and ginger. A slight musk lingers in the citrus and it will make you never be forgotten. I promise!

Little Wing~It is my interpretation of Monoi Tiare Tahiti. It features the gorgeous scent of the tiare flower(or Tahitian gardenia) with a touch of orchid. An exceptionally beautiful floral fragrance, close your eyes and it will take you some place tropical.
Fly on......

Sweet Jane~A heady combination of Nag Champa and Patchouli blend beautifully into a complex and mysterious fragrance.

Mmm.. don't those sound lovely?! One lucky reader will be the happy (and good-smelling) owner of all 3 of these perfumes!

But that's not all!! For those of you who can't wait to find out if they've won, or, are sadly not the winner, PiixlWix is offering a 10% off coupon good at her Etsy store to use on any of the listed items!! Wow! Just use the code: BURNING10 at checkout.

Be sure to follow PiixlWix Candle Co.'s blog, Magnetic Mayhem for more information and crafts!

Hey guess what? Everyone's skin is different, if after using one of these lovely fragrances you begin to notice a not-so-lovely irritation, please stop using it and consider consulting a doctor :) These perfumes, are of course, for external use only.

I'll be doing a product review as soon as I get it in the mail so keep an eye out ;)

Let's get this party started!

I Survived Warrior Dash Hawaii 2012!

Yesterday I was given the opportunity to participate in a fantastic event called Warrior Dash! If you haven't heard of it, it is a 3 mile mud run riddled with 12 obstacles! The event is hosted all over the country, as well as in Canada and Australia. It began in 2009 and run locations change every year. Check their website for more information! I hope they come to Hawaii again before we leave here!

Warrior Dash Hawaii was held at Dillingham Ranch which is adjacent to the Waianae Mountains in North Shore Oahu.

The point of Warrior Dash is to have fun, get dirty and challenge yourself, and we did just that! I ran it with two good friends and we had a blast! This was my first official run and I'm proud to say we never stopped to walk and I only skipped one obstacle. I'll tell you why in a moment :)

One of the fun things about Warrior Dash is that they encourage "dressing up". Everyone came in some kind of costume, it was like Halloween in March! I saw pink tutus, 80s Jazzercise-esque getup, a hillbilly "pregnant" girl with empty beer cans pinned to her cut off jean shorts... and then there was us! Merlotte's waitresses from True Blood! Being the blonde I, of course, was Sookie :)

Let me introduce... The Before Picture

Merlotte's Waitresses (that's me on the right)
And now... The After Picture

pretty good right?
I actually was able to salvage my shirt :) Thank you OxiClean! The phrase of the day was "I had mud in places I didn't no existed!"

We ran in the 2PM wave. Anyone who ran in that wave is considered a "B.A." in my book. It began to rain the moment we got to the Start line. Then it rained harder.. and harder.. and harder.. until I was halfway up the second obstacle and it actually rained harder. Eventually it lightened a bit, but I still had to take my glasses off so I could see. Thank goodness for those apron pockets! Thanks to that, my friend and a couple volunteers my glasses made it out in one piece. I don't recommend wearing glasses to this event!

Because of the rain the whole trail was one giant mud slide. The obstacles were slick and covered in mud and rain. We actually decided to skip the first one altogether. It involved climbing a rope up a vertical wall, and since we had no traction to speak of whatsoever, and there was a line because it was the very first obstacle, we decided just to skip it. Still, I was so worried I was going to fall on a couple of them! I held on tight though and made it through.

Here are a couple shots of some of the obstacles I was able to get from the road driving in.

I'm really glad I got a shot of this one! This is so much higher than it looks in the picture. I got to the top and thought to myself "What am I doing up here!?" The pole was so slippery with mud and water, I grabbed on, swung around so I was facing the stairs and let go! I shot down to the ground and collapsed in the mud! I was so proud of myself for actually sliding down that pole!

This was before the rain. See how nice the trail looks?

This one was fun. One of the ropes on the opposite side snapped just as I reached the top, making the whole thing jerk. I had to lay across the top to swing my leg over. You make great friends with the people behind you when you start to go over the top, you end up staring down at them while you look for a foot hole!
During the whole thing I swam through a lake, dropped down a vertical board, leapt over fires and swam through a mud pit. I felt extremely accomplished when I crossed the finish line! I earned that turkey leg and free beer afterwards! I'm not much of a beer drinker so I celebrated the occasion by finishing off my first Miller Lite ;)

This was after a bath in the lake.

I feel so blessed that I was given this opportunity! Thank you Andrea and April!

Warriors RAWR!

A Pin A Day!

Easter is drawing near and today's pin is thus related. Shaving cream painting! Obviously not limited to Easter. I'm excited to think of when else this art style would come in handy.

This lovely piece of work comes to us from the blog Little Wonders' Days

After drying, write notes to family and friends then mail them off as Easter cards!

I would love to cut a hole in the middle and create a sort of frame. If it's a smaller card size you could stick a magnet on the back and voila! Refrigerator art for the fam! OMG I'm getting myself so excited!!! :D

Be sure to follow me on Pinterest by clicking on the button at the top of the page under the banner!

Not a pinner? Need an invite? Leave a comment or shoot me an email and let me know and I'll invite you!

Bird Feeder Fun

I've really been wanting to do a bird feeder craft with Miss M!

Ok, really I wanted to do it for myself and Miss M wasn't really that interested, she wanted to blow bubbles.

However! It was successful, easy and fun. What more can you ask for in a craft? Oh, it was cheap too!

This one is an oldie but a goodie: Toilet paper roll bird feeder!

1. Cut a small hole in the top of the roll and thread through a piece of string or twine. Then smother the roll with peanut butter.

2. Toss some bird seed on a plate and roll it around to get it nice and covered, try to cover as much as the peanut butter as you can with bird seed.

3. Hang it up! A branch on a tree in your yard, a nail on the eave of your house, wherever works best for you. Try to pick somewhere that will give you a view from a window, especially a window your little one can see out of easily.

I hung ours on a bougainvillea arm reaching out into our yard.

Here are some shots of the visitors we acquired

If you try this out let me know! I want to know how it goes! I have another bird feeder craft idea that I'm working on, I'll report back later.
