F.lux computer app - Is the light from your monitor hurting your eyes?

Ok, let's face it, before I started this blog I already spent too much time on the computer, now it's even worse. Not only that, but a lot of the time I'm on it is at night after the kiddos are down to sleep. One of the unpleasant side effects of this bad habit is my eyes hurt. We all know monitor back light isn't good for you, but who is ready to ditch their computer at this point in the game? I'm not!

Luckily, smart people elsewhere in the world are working to solve this problem! Mr. Eight just linked me to a new computer app called F.lux. The application saves your location and adjusts the light of your computer monitor to be more like the time of day.

"F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day."

How cool is that? I'm really excited about this! I've never been a fan of the eerie blue glow at night. Like in the movies when someone is sitting in dark room typing away, bathed in the incandescent glow. Any X-Files fans remember Scully at her computer in the first couple seasons? (Yeah, I'm that kind of nerd.)

The first time F.lux changed the lighting in my display I had just sat down after putting Mr. C to bed and I thought I had sunglasses on! I wear glasses normally, so I actually reached up and took my regular glasses off and was so confused when the colors didn't change! The evening light is a lot like when you have brown sunglasses on during a bright sunny day. It took a minute to get used to, but I immediately noticed a difference in how my eyes felt looking at the screen.

I've seen comments on their page about glitches, so check your operating system and make sure this app will work for you. It's also recommended to not use F.lux while you're photo/video editing. For this reason there is a nifty button you can click on "Disable for one hour".

It's a new app so we can expect more adjustments and better software in the future. But for now, enjoy!
