It's finally happened. I'm fighting ammonia. I'd heard this happened with Rockin' Green but I was really hoping we could skate by. We were doing really good for a while there!
Poor Miss M, I woke up at 6AM to her screaming "I have owie!!!" and crying. She had been sleeping in a prefold folded inside a cover. Her butt was bright red and when I went to smell her diaper I think my nose hairs burned off. I could have wrung that thing out and sold it at the pharmacy, it was straight ammonia!
I know RG has a ammonia fighter but I think I'm going to pass. There are so many suggested methods for fighting ammonia I didn't know where to start! So I called my neighbor, she also suffered ammonia blues not too long ago.
So here is the plan of attack:
1. Start off with a nice boil, then sun them as they come out of the pot.
2. Cold rinse to get off anything that might be left.
3. Hot wash with a Tbsp or so of Blue Original Dawn dish soap.
4. Rinse Rinse Rinse!
I'm so irritated with RG right now! We're using Hard Rock in a GE top loader, it was the suggested brand since we live on base and have hard water.
After this I'm pretty sure I'll be going back to my homemade detergent with water softener added. Diaper detergent is such a controversial topic, especially ingredients like Borax and Fels Naptha, but I never had this kind of issue with my detergent. Any problem I did have stemmed from hard water, which I didn't know we had.
I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow! Wish me luck!
