Aloha Friday 5/25

Welcome to Aloha Friday! It's a weekly blog event that started at An Island Life where I ask a simple question, answer it, then invite you to answer it also!

Memorial Day weekend is almost here! The sales! The food! Who's going camping? I'm not, but if you are I hope you have fun. And everyone be safe!! For goodness sake, I make a point to not drive anywhere past the afternoon on Memorial Day because people get crazy! I think it's the beginning of summer, it gets to you. Or at least that's how it felt in Alaska, coming out of the cold, dark winter... anyway. :)

This week's question: Who wears the grillin apron in your house? You or your significant other? Someone else? Let me know! I'm curious. :)

My answer: I love grilling! I know Mr. Eight does too but he's been on nights pretty much all 3 years we've been married and so he hasn't been around to do a lot of grilling in the day time. On top of that, for the entire time he's been on nights he also did not get holidays off. Lucky for us, this year he's doing something a little different right now and so he has a 3 day weekend just like normal people! Yay! I'm getting off track.

The point is, if I wanted something grilled I had to do it myself. We recently went out and bought a really nice propane grill. I've learned how to work it but for some things I miss charcoal. I did ribs for the first time on propane and I didn't like it that much. I like doing the wood chips, banking the coals, all that jazz. If I do ribs again this weekend I think I'll bust out the little charcoal grill for it! I'll be posting my favorite rib rub and bbq sauce recipe soon too!

  1. I love charcoal! It can be kind of a pain in the butt to get going, though... I can't believe it's already Memorial Day - this year feels so weird to me with the weather!

  2. I am still new to exploring cooking, and I have yet to grill :p. My grandpa was actually the griller in our house - He passed away last July, but every time I walk by the grill I think of how much he loved it - And one day I plan on giving it a try!

  3. Actually, grilling is the one area of cooking where my husband will sometimes take over. Although, I'm typically the one that still does it. :) We definitely only use charcoal! I LOVE the flavor!

  4. I love grilled foods, but I am terrified of the grill. Don't ask, I don't know why, but I can not grill. The hubby is completely responsible in that area!

  5. Ditto to Kelly - I love grilled, but I've never done it. But hubs is perfectly happy to do it, so it's a break for me. I'm not complaining, lol! :)

  6. We grilled for the first time of the season last night. I love it b/c it is so much easier with clean up and healthy.

  7. I'm actually terrified of grilling. Maybe because I have not done too much of it. I have an awesome vegetarian grill cookbook that I got to review that actually is motivating me to grill more. I'm thinking this is the perfect weekend to muster up the courage and just grill.

  8. My Mother In Law!

I never got the hang of grilling (I burn everything, or undercook everything I can't find a happy medium.) My husband HATES grilled foods so never even tried. If we ever have a cookout its alway my MIL manning the grill, and she's pretty good.

  9. I love grilling, but I let the hubby do it 75% of the time, since he doesn't get to spend *any* time in the kitchen...it's off limits to him. ;)

Looking forward to your recipe - I have a rib rub/BBQ ribs recipe I live by! :)

  10. I like charcoal better, too! We did the same thing, spent a bunch of money on a nice propane grill, and wanted the charcoal back!

  11. Now we have an hibachi that we can use for personal grilling and we can still use the big propane grill when we're having friends over.

  12. My husband is the griller. I'm super afraid to even turn it on! :)

  13. I think it's a good way to cook. I wish I had one. I've never done it myself, but I've eaten from it.
