The Importance of Military Flags

Living on a military installation, it’s really important to a lot of people to express their patriotism or association with a certain branch by displaying a flag. It’s really great to drive down the street and see porch after porch decorated with American flags, POW/MIA flags and others.

Since 9/11 just passed, a lot more families got out their flags to show their support of the troops. I think I saw more flags on 9/11 then I do on the 4th of July! I couldn’t believe the number of people who had the Flag of Heroes displayed, or their branch flag. We’re Air Force and have just recently moved to a Navy installation, so we may have to be getting our own military flag soon to show our support of the Air Force!

In military housing I feel like it’s really important to show your support of the troops, since there are so many families with deployed military members. However, it can be even more important for families living off base to show their support and association with the military. I remember the first time I saw a POW/MIA flag on my neighbors house across the street. I was really young and asked my Dad what it was. He explained what the letters stood for, and how it was important to remember the men and women who were missing in action or prisoners of war.

I know in the future my children will see 9/11 flags and ask their meaning and I will have to explain the terrible things that happened to our country and the events that occurred afterwards. By putting a flag outside your door, you tell your civilian neighbors that you support the troops, are a military member and are proud to be an American.

  1. I think it's important to show your support no matter where you are.

  2. I completely agree. I think that a lot of people who are in military families understand the importance but not enough non-military families stress the symbolism of the flag.

What a lovely blog! I am following you now and was hoping that you would return the favor, if you can. :-)

  3. Yes I noticed that too about the amount of flags flying 9/11. I am glad that people all over are showing support because we need to support them, plain and simple.

  4. This is a great idea. We do not have a flag to show our support but we will be getting one. I did notice more on 9/11 as well.
