The Ferris Wheels Microwaveable Heat Pack Review

You have a chance to win this awesome heat pack in the Mother's Day Gift Ideas Giveaway which is now open for entries!

When I was growing up we always had a hot/cold pack laying around ready to make any aches and pains go away. My mom is a huge fan of them and I've probably bought her more than a few over the past several Mother's Days. My sister always suffered from bad cramps every month and loved to heat one up and lay it across her belly.

When I got the opportunity to review a neck and shoulder heat pack from The Ferris Wheels I was so excited! I've never purchased one for myself, and hadn't used one since I left home years ago!

When my heat pack came in the mail I knew right away it was good quality. The fabric, the stitching, and the many compartments, all told me that a lot of effort had gone into making it. It's thick and heavy and feels fabulous wrapped around the shoulders!

The wrap comes with instructions to help you get a perfect fit and the most benefit. I see heat packs sold in the mall all the time but I've never seen one quite like this. It's much wider, so it covers a lot more of the shoulders, while still wrapping tightly around the neck. The wraps are filled with flaxseed and rice for maximum heat retention, but can also be put in the freezer and used as a cold pack.

I heated it up for Mr. Eight and let him try it out. Even after it had cooled down he didn't want to take it off, the weight is just so nice! I had originally planned on giving it to my mom for Mother's Day when she comes to visit this year, but now I'm not so sure.. ;)

Be sure to like The Ferris Wheels on Facebook, as well as follow their blog for more information about heat packs and how they can help you.

After 29 long, wonderful and fun days we have come down to April 30th and the GRAND PRIZE!!!

SAH Cloth Diapering Mom originally wanted to celebrate Baby K's birthday with 12 sponsors to match her birth date, April 12th. However, things quickly grew and we ended up with a whole month of giveaways instead!

Myself and some other bloggers helped her along the way (30 days is a long time!), and we were able to pull off 30 awesome giveaways on 8 different blogs to celebrate little Baby K's 1st birthday!

I really appreciate the opportunity to work with all these amazing bloggers, and I feel like I know all of them so much better now :) I'm also grateful for all the new fans I've acquired this month and I hope you'll stick around!

We owe it to SAH Cloth Diapering Mama for putting this all together and making it possible. 30 days of giveaways is a lot, and it takes a lot of time and dedication to pull it off! Thanks to all the other bloggers who were involved along with me!

A Little About the Diaper
Baby Babu pocket cloth diapers have tons of features to make cloth diapering a breeze for you and your baby! Our one-size pocket cloth diapers all come with the following features: -TWO openings to stuff the inner pocket of the cloth diaper. Why two openings you may wonder? Two openings allow for the insert to simply self agitate out in the washing machine, preventing mommy or daddy from having to reach in and pull out a yucky, soiled insert. With Baby Babu pocket cloth diapers, just dispose of any #2 in the toilet, toss in the washing machine and that’s it! We’ve eliminated the need for any additional dirty work. -Our adjustable snap button system, you now have a cloth diaper for life! The button system allows for sizing from 8-35+ pounds, so you’ll never have to search for new diapers to fit your growing cutie. -Each diaper wing has 3 button snaps to ensure a secure, but comfortable fit (most competitors have only 2 snaps on their diapers). But wait, there’s more! We’ve incorporated an extra gusset inside of the outer leg gusset to help prevent leakage for those little guys and girls that have a tendency towards the dreaded blow-outs or flood style pee pee incidents (moms and dads love this). -Finally, each pocket cloth diaper comes with one 3 layer super absorbent insert and super soft, moisture wicking liner.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Update October 2012: I made this bucket of detergent last April and I still have several inches left in the bottom! We've been using an HE top loader for one month, but up until September we were using a regular ol' top loader!

I finally ran out of my homemade laundry detergent a couple weeks ago. I had a bottle of store bought detergent my neighbor left when they PCSed last summer and so, great procrastinator that I am, I've just been using that. I've been using the homemade kind for over a year now, I've probably made it twice since I started, it lasts awhile, and the first time I used the store bought detergent the smell of it almost knocked me over. Pulling the clothes out of the dryer was like getting hit in the face with a perfume bottle. It smelled good, I just wasn't used to it.

Since this whole thing with the ammonia in the diapers, I've decided to just go back to my homemade detergent and add water softener to every load to ward off the hard water.

I really like this recipe, I used it on my cloth diapers for about a year and only stopped because I was having problems that turned out to be a result of hard water on base, not my detergent.

This recipe comes from Grocery Cart Challenge.

1/3 bar Fels Naptha Soap
1/2 c. Borax
1/2 c. Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (not baking soda)
water

You'll need a large 5 gallon bucket with a lid and a cheese grater.

1. Grate the soap and put it in the saucepan with 6 c. water and heat until it melts.*

2. Add washing soda and borax and stir until dissolved.

3. Pour 4 c. hot water into your bucket, then add the soap mixture.

4. Add 22 cups of water and stir.*

5. Put the lid on the bucket and let it sit for 12-24 hours before using.*

6. Use about 1/2 c. of detergent per load of clothes. I use about a 1/4 c. for my cloth diapers.

*Tips:

  • Don't let the heat get too high, it will start to bubble all over the place. Use the fine grater so the soap melts quicker.
  • 22 cups = 1.4 gallons of water. I used a cleaned out milk jug to measure the water using approximately 1 and a half jugs.
  • Make sure you get a bucket with a lid. Prevent spills and accidents by keeping the lid secure on the buckets at all times. Never leave a child unattended when the lid is not secure, buckets are known to be drowning hazards (check out the awesome pictures on the side of your buckets for more information). Pets should also be kept away from the bucket, my cat has tried to jump on it before thinking the lid was on when it wasn't.
  • The detergent will have a weird consistency, part liquid and part jelly. No one part is more important than the other, so don't worry about it.
  • I doubled the batch this time around, when all 44 cups of water are added in the detergent comes up to about 4 inches from the top of the bucket. I'll probably just eyeball it next time so save myself the pain of measuring, although using the milk jug worked quite well.

Aloha Friday #11

Welcome to Aloha Friday! It's a weekly blog event that started at An Island Life where I ask a simple question, answer it, then invite you to answer it also!

I was so sad I missed Aloha Friday last week so I'm glad to be back today!

We had a great time planting flowers on Earth Day this last weekend! Mr. C took a nap and stayed home with daddy while Miss M and I went to the garden center. She was so excited to go. They have a big display with wind chimes she gets to play with when we go, and she's never gotten to pick out her own flowers before, so that was a big deal for her. We planted flowers and some mint. I liked the idea of mint because it grows fast and she can pick off little leaves without killing it. They smell good as well so it has a bit of interactive sensory-ness too.

This week's question: Did you do anything for Earth Day? Do you talk to your kids about recycling and planting trees and all that? Or is it not really something your family focuses on?

Thanks for playing!

Look here for more Aloha Friday!

ADAY.org

I just stumbled across this awesome project while surfing online called ADay.org! On May 15th, those participating are asked to take photographs of everyday life surrounding three main topics: Home, Work and Connections. Anyone can join in, you don't need a fancy camera or experience. The goal is to share your perspective of the world and what is important to you.

On May 15th the website aday.org will become a platform you can use to upload your pictures, everyone is asked to upload a max of 10 images. All of the pictures will be saved to be studied and enjoyed in the future, and some images will be chosen to be featured in a book or digital exhibition.

The project is initiated by a non-profit organization called Expressions of Humankind. It's also being supported by professional photographers, photojournalists and curators, as well as other inspirational people.

Here is what the site has to say about why you should join:

"Why should I join?
Because you love photography. Because you have something to say. Because your life matters. Because the idea of doing something together worldwide is thrilling. Because you like the thought of saving a little something of yourself for generations to come. Because your take on daily life is part of a much bigger picture."
I'm still thinking about what I want to photograph, but I feel like maybe it will just come to me that day. I hope you guys will sign up to and be part of this awesome project and share views of your life on May 15th!

Sponsor Spotlight - Tender Bottoms

Photobucket

I am so excited to introduce this business to you because I absolutely love the products and the price! Tender Bottoms sells cloth wipes, laundry detergent, and burp rags. Her cloth wipes come in 1 ply or 2 ply, and are some of the cheapest I've seen around. I've been using my wipes for a few weeks now and they have held up quite nicely in the wash, are super absorbent, soft and get the job done! You can get a pack of 30 1 ply wipes for just $10! That's $0.33/wipe! 2 ply will set you back only $0.50/wipe! What a steal. She also sells wipes with a terry cloth backing which is great for big messes. Plus they come in cute prints to boot :)

Then there's the detergent.. oh the detergent! Tender Bottoms sells handmade goatsmilk laundry detergent, it comes in a convenient resealable bag with instructions. One bag will get you 45 loads, or 90 in an HE washer. It comes un-scented, but there is also a scented version in Macintosh Apple. Oh my goodness I want to eat it it smells so good! Yum! It leaves my clothes soft and fresh smelling :) One of these bags is only $8.00, not bad for handmade goatsmilk detergent!

I love supporting WAHM. I really recommend checking out her Etsy shop, right now there is a 10% code in the store description good through the 30th. Also, follow her on Facebook and watch for a chance to win some wipes and detergent!

Wordless Wednesday 4/25

While I was sunning diapers, Mr. C was having fun...

I had to draw the line when he started for the fresh white diapers on the fence. I then did something I've never done before, but have always wanted to do... I hosed him off in the back yard! (BTW next time your kids get covered in mud, take off their clothes and use the jet setting on the garden hose to get the dirt out!)

Fine more WW here

I Saw, I Pinned, I Crafted - Egg Carton Flower Wreath 4/23

I saw this beautiful flower wreath made from egg cartons at Easter time on Pinterest. It originated from Homemade Serenity who definitely deserves credit for this awesome craft! Be sure to check out her tutorial, hers looks a lot better than mine ;)

I had a lot of fun making this. It was cool to see what kind of flower shapes I could come up with from the egg carton.

I let Miss M start the painting and then I finished it after the kids had gone to bed. I only had one egg carton so I made a small one and hung it next to the back door to brighten up the lanai.

I'm quite proud of it if you can't tell ;)

Earth Day 2012

To celebrate Earth Day this year I took Miss M to the NEX Garden Center and let her pick out two plants. We've been doing gardening already so she's pretty familiar with what we were doing, as well as with the Garden Center.

Not long after we walked in I told her the plan:

"You can pick out one flower and one vegetable, OK?"

"OK!" Miss M spun around, "I want this one!" As she grabbed a pot of flowers half her size off a bottom shelf.

The vegetable section was a little depleted so I decided on some mint. It's sturdy and grows fast so she'll be able to watch it grow.

We came home and transplanted them into some empty pots. Then Miss M had to do some "tree magic" to help them along. If you haven't seen Totoro you won't know what I'm talking about, but it's kind of a thing in our house.

It started to rain so we headed inside and turned on Totoro. Overall it was a good way to celebrate Earth Day with her for the first time!

Ammonia Blues (or Fighting the Good Fight)

I talked earlier this week about how I was fighting ammonia build up in my diapers. It really just came out of nowhere; one day everything was perfect, the next everything sucked. I have to say, it doesn't look like I will be using Rockin' Green again anytime soon. Sorry RG lovers!

So here is what I did to fight the good fight.

1. Boil

I boiled the inserts 3 or 4 at a time in my 16 quart stock pot. It smelled pretty gross and I was surprised in a pleasantly disgusting way at how much gunk came out of them. I changed the water periodically, dumping it in the toilet so I could better assess the affect the boiling was having. The water was yellowish every time, and it smelled, did I mention that?

Notice the soap suds? Not a good sign.
2. Sun

I used tongs to take the inserts out of the boiling water (watch out for steam) and transferred them into another, smaller, pot to cool while I threw a few more inserts in. After they'd cooled a bit I took them outside, wrang them out and hung them up to dry in the sun. If you don't want to wait for them to cool use kitchen gloves to keep from burning yourself.

The Great Fence of Fluff.

The wipes were in the basket so I went ahead and let them sun too for good measure.

Random sock I found in the bottom of the laundry basket.
3. After they were done sunning I took them back in and stripped them with Dawn in the washing machine with the diapers themselves. Make sure you use blue Dawn original. I used about a Tbsp (I really estimated it, I had a lot of diapers so it was probably a heaping Tbsp), ran a hot wash and then rinse, rinse, rinse. I rinsed my little heart out, took them out of the dryer and put them back up on the fence!

Results: It's been sort of hit and miss in the ammonia department. Some diapers seem to immediately smell of ammonia after a single pee, others not so much. It's really interesting, since I stripped the diapers I've of course been smelling them to make sure I'm handling the ammonia problem, and a lot of times it just smells like pure urine. It's weird, like it didn't smell quite that pure before. My neighbor said the same thing after she stripped hers with Dawn too, so I'm assuming this is a result of the Dawn strip and not the boiling. Although I think the boiling did help.

That same neighbor also gave me a good tip, and that's to rinse out nighttime diapers in the morning before putting the in the can. This is a great way to prevent ammonia build up and other problems.

A Pin A Day 4/21

I absolutely love this idea for displaying photos. Canvas can be really expensive, and frames can be hard to coordinate. Check out these glass frames that are used to create a collage! Brilliant! This would be easy to add to, as well as change out the pictures every year or every season!
